'Tomb Raider' movie reboot release date, news: Upcoming film to focus on a younger Lara Croft

The upcoming "Tomb Raider" film won't premiere until early 2018, but a few details are beginning to paint what kind of movie it is. Some of the things that have been confirmed is that the movie will be a reboot, it will be based on the two reboot games but not directly tied to them, and it will star Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.

Producer Graham King, during an interview on the "Hey U Guys" podcast, confirmed that the movie would be a fresh start instead of a continuation of the two films that starred Angelina Jolie. This would make sense, given that the Jolie films launched a decade ago, and the mythology of Lara Croft has changed since then.

"This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that's what Alicia found so interesting about it. I think the storytelling is really good and I think we've got the right crew and a great director and I think it's going to be really fun making a film like this," King explained.

According to Collider, this statement ties up to what Vikander stated in a previous interview. At the time, Vikander explained that the movie would explore Lara Croft at the beginning of her career. During this expedition, she would grow into the Tomb Raider that fans of the franchise were familiar with.

While the film is primarily based on the 2013 "Tomb Raider" game and its sequel, "Rise of the Tomb Raider," it will not be tied to their narratives. This is quite the opposite of what Ubisoft is doing with their upcoming "Assassin's Creed" movie which is set in the same universe as the games.

"Tomb Raider" is scheduled to premiere on March 16, 2018.
