'Tokyo Ghoul' season 3 release date: Season speculated to launch this winter

Tokyo Ghoul - Ken Kaneki Studio Pierrot

According to a report from Anime Maru, Madhouse Entertainment will be stepping in to make "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3, pleasing fans who have petitioned for the studio to take over due to the lackluster efforts for seasons 1 and 2 from Studio Pierrot. The report also mentions that the season will be premiering this winter.

The report points out that the studio will be making their take on the series a lot more faithful to the manga source material compared to what the first two seasons presented. This will allow the anime to correct itself and bring back its story arc and characters more in line with what fans of the manga expect.

"This is perhaps the most disillusioning, psychological and darkest plot line that we will attempt to adapt," stated an anonymous studio writer codenamed Bob. "We hope to remain as faithful as possible to the source material, although we cannot guarantee that more gory scenes such as Touka's standardized exam test-taking will not be censored."

Fans also speculate that one of the main reasons for the delay other than the shift from one studio to the other is the fact that a live-action film adaptation is in development. It is possible that the publishers of the original manga and the writers are currently preoccupied with the film before work on the anime's third season can begin.

The live-action adaptation is likely going to tackle the events showcased in the first season of the anime although it might see significant story changes in order to fit the story within the time constraints of a theatrical film.

However, neither Madhouse nor Studio Pierrot has given an official announcement regarding the fate or release date of "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 and whether or not they have any direct involvement with the live-action film. As such, any information should still be regarded as a rumor until proven otherwise.
