'The Last Ship' season 3 air date, spoilers: next season will have new setting

 TNT

"The Last Ship" season 2 may have ended with the sudden assassination of Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) but the USS Nathan James will push forward with its mission of restoring mankind before the virus nearly wiped out humanity. However, season 3 will be bringing in a lot of changes and the series will be rebooting itself in some form.

According to a report from TV Guide, the series will have a fresh start. It will no longer be about developing a cure as Dr. Scott already achieved this prior to her death. The main goal moving forward is to spread this cure around the world and to rebuild human civilization. This is where the main conflict will draw from.

The trailer for the series reveals that the show will now be set primarily in Asia, specifically in China, where the virus was allowed to mutate and the cure was not properly distributed to the Chinese people. The USS Nathan James will be heading over to make sure that these two problems are resolved as soon as possible.

TV Guide also points out that there will be a political side to the third season. It is explained that despite the fact humanity has been decimated, the world is not united. Instead, there will be territorial disputes and this will lead to large-scale conflicts between nations.

According to the report, the show will also retain its high-level of action and explosions as this is expected from a show being produced by action director Michael Bay.

"If you're due for a big summer blockbuster and don't have a babysitter on a Sunday night, 'The Last Ship' is the show for you. We take you around the world and back in 42 minutes," stated showrunner Steve Kane.

"The Last Ship" season 3 is set to premiere this coming June 12.
