The second season of "The Last Kingdom," the historical fiction series based on Bernard Cornwell's "The Saxon Stories" novels, recently came to an end. The author shares a few words about the show's future, and according to him, it seems bright.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, author Bernard Cornwell teases a few details about "The Last Kingdom." He shares, "They're on the fourth one and there are six more if they want them. I think there is a third season proposed, so that's great. I will certainly be writing at least another couple, so we'll see."
So far, Cornwell has not dabbled with the adaptation, although he asked to be the show's technical advisor.
Cornwell expresses he is pleased with how his novels' adaptation turned out. He adds that he would be surprised if Carnival Films, the people responsible for the hit period drama "Downton Abbey," cannot make good shows.
To note, Netflix has yet to make an official statement saying it has renewed "The Last Kingdom" for a third season.
Despite the lack of information on "The Last Kingdom" season 3, one can infer based on history. The period drama, however, takes most of its material from Cornwell's novels. Hence, fans of the series can simply choose to read the books to learn what happens next.
"The Last Kingdom" follows "The Saxon Stories" closely. Its first two seasons were based on the series' first four novels. If Netflix renews the show, the following seasons could easily be based on the remaining six novels of the series. New conflicts could be introduced in season 3, conflicts Uhtred has to face with King Alfred.
For the uninitiated, "The Last Kingdom" is set in the 10<sup>th century. It follows the story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who is based on a real-life character from history.
