'The Incredibles 2' release date, plot rumors: Sequel to introduce a new direction for series

Very little has been confirmed at this point about "The Incredibles 2" and Pixar has yet to release any official image or teaser trailer. However, writer-director Brad Bird has confirmed that it will be quite familiar to fans of the original while introducing something entirely new for the future of the franchise.

"Hopefully it's the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction. I mean, that's the trick with a sequel. It's repeating yourself, without repeating yourself," Bird told Entertainment Weekly, confirming that it will still follow the same cast of characters but will be introducing new elements to make the film feel fresh and new.

Unfortunately, Bird did not make any comments regarding the film's plot, villains or whether the movie takes place immediately after the events of the first film or if there will be several years in between the two films to reflect the real world gap between their releases.

Screen Rant points out that the movie may be dealing with the Parr family discovering their new status given that, by the end of the first, film they had come out as a superhero family again in a world where superheroes had been banned. The family will also have to deal with Jack-Jack and his new powers.

The report also points out that Pixar has a mixed record when it comes to the quality of their sequels. The "Toy Story" films have been critically acclaimed and "Finding Dory" was met with positive reviews but the studio has also been known for mediocre titles like "Cars 2."

Rumors suggest that the movie may involve Dash and Jack-Jack fighting each other or either one of them betraying the family as a new villain. There are speculations from fans that the movie may bring back Syndrome, although this has yet to be confirmed.

"The Incredibles 2" is scheduled to premiere on June 21, 2019.
