"Terminator Genisys" serves as a soft reboot while still continuing the story set by James Cameron's earlier two films, but critic ratings and the fact that the film was released against "Inside Out" and "Jurassic World" led to a weak opening weekend in the U.S. box office. However, reports state that the planned sequels may still push forward.
According to a report from Cinema Blend, the two sequels to "Terminator Genisys" won't bank solely on how the film performs domestically but also on its sales in the international market. The film has yet to open in Spain, Germany, Italy and China, all of which could help the film earn back its $155 million expense.
As of the time of writing, the film has a critic rating of 27 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and has currently managed to sum up $138.1 million in sales. The numbers may not look good on paper but according to a report from Inquistr, there was a spike in ticket sales after the initial opening weekend.
"There is no question but that the U.S. market got affected by reviews," explained the vice chairman of Paramount Pictures Rob Moore, "but through the weekend, we actually played above what people thought we would."
Is there even a need for a sequel? Fans that went to see the movie will take note of an end-credits scene that hinted Skynet is not dead, and director Alan Taylor shares these sentiments.
In a report from Cinema Blend, the director stated, "Yes, the looming questions are, 'Who sends Pops back? Where did Skynet get it together to attack John Connor? How did that happen?' And there are answers to these things that are not provided in this movie, instantly."
As is the norm for big budget films such as "Terminator Genisys," the likelihood of a sequel depends on the total sales from both the domestic and international market, which means the film still has high hopes for two more installments.
The first sequel is currerntly slated for release on May 19, 2017 and the third, presumably the final installment in the reboot franchise, is scheduled for June 29, 2018.
