'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2' news: Krang revealed in new trailer

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows Official still; Platinum Dunes, Paramount Pictures

The Super Bowl trailer for the upcoming "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" movie may be only 30 seconds long but it did give fans a better look at some of the action and the first official glimpse of the alien villain known as Krang.

The first sign of Krang is when April O'Neil (Megan Fox) looks up to the sky and sees a giant spherical structure that closely resembles the Technodrome seen in the 1980s "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" cartoon show. A few seconds later and the four ninja turtles are then seen facing a giant robot with humanoid features.

When Michelango gets closer to the robot and taps what appears to be a hollow case within the robot's mid section, Krang suddenly appears screaming.

In the original cartoon series and in subsequent comic book appearances, Krang is always depicted as a brain-like alien coming from Dimension X. In the original cartoon, the 2012 series and in the IDW comic books, Krang is portrayed as a world conquering villain while in the 2003 series the krang was portrayed as a benevolent race of aliens.

From the design of the robot and how Krang appears in the trailer, it is more apparent that the movie is taking inspiration from the 1980s cartoon series more than anything else.

This is also supported by the fact that the movie will have both Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and wrestler Stephen "Sheamus" Farrelly as Rocksteady, two characters who originated from the cartoons. Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) will also be in the film but this portrayal appears to be based on the comic books and 2012 series instead of the 1980s cartoon.

Other key scenes in the short trailer include that of the turtle's van and its side-weapons as well as a shot of the vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell).

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" opens in theaters this June 3.
