'Supergirl' season 2 updates: Renewal likely to be announced soon

 CBS

"Supergirl" on CBS was not a major hit as many expected but as stated in a report from Variety, there is a very high chance of the show getting renewed for a second season. CBS has not yet confirmed that "Supergirl" season 2 is happening but the report does point out that it is likely to happen very soon.

According to Variety, viewership ratings for the show were not as high as the network hoped for but they were never too low either. However, this all changed when "Supergirl" did a crossover with The CW's "The Flash," establishing that they do co-exist in a large multiverse.

This is further supported by a statement from "Supergirl" executive producer Ali Adler who stated in an interview with TVLine that there have been unnofficial rumblings behind the scenes that the series was indeed going to be given a second season anytime soon.

"We heard very positive things, unofficially, from Les Moonves. CBS Entertainment President Glenn Geller and executive vice president of current programs Bridget Wiley -- they've all been very, very supportive. We're definitely talking about what season 2 looks like," Adler explained.

During the same interview, Adler explained that they did have a vague idea where the plot will lead to in season 2. The first season did end on a cliffhanger, with Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) opening a pod and being surprised upon seeing its contents, hinting that there is a big twist coming for season 2.

According to a report from Screen Rant, season 2 should start introducing several new characters from the DC Universe, with superheroes such as Power Girl from Earth-2, Valor or Batgirl cited as some of the best characters for the show to focus on. Superman is also cited but this does create a conflict of interest with the DCEU films.

"Supergirl" season 2, if renewed, is expected to premiere during this fall.
