'Supergirl' season 2 spoilers: Frederick Schmidt set to play iconic Superman villain Metallo

"Supergirl" season 2 is officially bringing Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) to the show, allowing to fight alongside his cousin Supergirl (Melissa Benoist). However, with Superman comes many of his villains and a report from Entertainment Weekly reveals that iconic Superman villain Metallo has been cast for the show.

According to the report, actor Frederick Schmidt has been cast as Metallo. The report continues to describe the character who will be facing both Superman and Supergirl and will have ties to their home planet and the Kryptonite that makes them weak.

Metallo's real name is John Corben and the report reveals that he will lose in a fight against Supergirl and Superman. However, a shadow organization is stated to pick him up and he will be reborn as the villain Metallo, a robotic super-villain powered by Kryptonite, which makes him a formidable antagonist against Supergirl and Superman.

The character first appeared in the "Action Comics" comic books in 1959 and has appeared in multiple iterations ever since. In "Smallville" the character was portrayed by Brian Austin Green although this depiction was radically different from the Metallo in the comic books.

Given that both Superman and Supergirl are not strong against Metallo it is widely speculated this means Mon-El (Chris Wood) will be the hero to save the day.

Mon-El has been revealed to be the character seen in the alien pod from the season 1 finale and he is a Daxamite, an alien race very similar to Kryptonians but is weak to lead instead of Kryptonite. In many iterations the Daxamites are described as descendants of Kryptonian colonists who have migrated to a different planet.

It is uncertain at this point how many episodes Metallo will appear in season 2 although it is expected that Metallo will be featured several times as a recurring villain given his long history with Superman in the comic books.

"Supergirl" season 2 will premiere this Oct. 10.
