After some back and forth and numerous rumors flooding the Internet, "Supergirl" has been officially renewed for a second season. However, as stated in a report from Variety, the show is moving from CBS to The CW, the same network where "Arrow," 'The Flash" and "Legends of Tomorrow" currently air.
According to the report, rumors of the show moving to The CW began back when season 1 was still in development. This was due to the fact that the CBS was geared more toward older audiences, particularly with their comedy and drama series.
When the series aired, it averaged a 2.5 rating for the 18-49 age bracket and 10.3 million viewers in Nielsen's rating estimates. The series garnered praise and managed to become the top-rated rookie drama on CBS but still paled in comparison to the network's other shows, particularly comedies like "The Big Bang Theory."
Despite ratings dropping as the show went on, the numbers saw a sudden increase following the crossover with "The Flash," which saw Barry Allen aka the Flash (Grant Gustin) traveling to the universe of "Supergirl." The Flash agreed to help Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and the latter agreed to help the former return to his home dimension.
This boosted the rumors that "Supergirl" would move to The CW Network despite CW executives denying the fact. Moving the show to the CW would not only help the series gain more audiences, given that the CW focuses on the same target audience that "Supergirl" does, but it will also allow the studios to implement more crossovers with "The Flash" and their other superhero shows.
However, the move may see the show get its budget cut down. As stated in a report from Movie News Guide, showrunner Greg Berlanti explained that filming in Los Angeles was not cheap and that the costs may affect the show's budget. Despite this, Berlanti promised that they would not have agreed to the deal if they could not find a way to do the show justice.
