'Super Smash Bros. 4' for Wii U and 3DS wins Favorite Video Game

 Nintendo

"Super Smash Bros." for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS has proven to be one of Nintendo's best selling games in recent years, alongside "Super Mario Maker" and "Splatoon." To further prove its lasting legacy, the game recently won the People's Choice Award for "Favorite Video Game," as per Nintendo Life.

The People's Choice Awards often recognize celebrities, television shows and movies but in recent years the awards celebration has also included video games on the list. Other than the Favorite Video Game award, there is also the Favorite Mobile Game, which targets games on mobile devices. This latter award was won by Candy Crush Saga.

Other nominees included Rockstar's "Batman: Arkham Knight" and "Grand Theft Auto V," "Mojang's "Minecraft" and Activision's "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare." However, of the different nominees, only "Batman: Arkham Knight" was released in 2015 as the other titles, including "Super Smash Bros.," were released prior.

Fans speculate that one reason for the game's victory is due to "Super Smash Bros." being consistent in its quality. Despite "Batman: Arkham Knight" being one of the highest rated games for modern consoles, its PC version has been plagued by numerous bugs, even in its recent re-release.

Back in September 2015 the 3DS version of the game sold well over 7 million copies while the Wii U version has sold over 4 million. While sales have since slowed down, the two versions combined have sold well over 10 million copies worldwide.

"Super Smash Bros." has also seen a series of DLC characters and stages added to the game, with Cloud from "Final Fantasy VII" being the latest. Corrin and Bayonetta will follow in February and as previously reported they will also be the last DLC additions to the game's roster.

To this point, Nintendo has not yet announced any plans for a new "Super Smash Bros." game to follow the title on the Wii U and 3DS.
