"Super Mario Maker" is launching for the 3DS this coming December, following up on the success that the game has enjoyed on the Wii U. In preparation for the handheld port, Nintendo has launched a brand new trailer that showcases all of the main gameplay mechanics, features, and content.

Just like the Wii U version, players can craft their own Mario stages, but this time, with the accuracy of the 3DS stylus. Players can design levels as they please, placing obstacles, traps, power-ups, and enemies in any location. The only requirement is that these custom-made levels must be beatable.

Players unfamiliar with the mechanics of making a stage can refer to the AI assistants, Mary O. and Yamamura. To further allow players to really get a grasp of the mechanics, the designers have included 100 of their own stages. Completing these will unlock more items and enemies to be used when designing a stage. It also serves as a sort of single-player campaign, with the story still being about Bowser kidnapping Princess Peach.

Visually, the game can switch instantly between the style of "New Super Mario Bros.," "Super Mario World," "Super Mario Bros. 3," and "Super Mario Bros." At any time while making a level, the player can switch to a test mode and actually play the stage they are designing.

The trailer reiterates that even though this is the 3DS version, gamers can download the user-made levels that were originally created on the Wii U. There will be the option to play recommended Wii U stages or to play randomly picked stages as well.

Custom 3DS levels can't be shared online yet, but players can share them locally via Street Pass. Also missing from the Wii U version are the mystery mushrooms and its corresponding costume.

"Super Mario Maker 3DS" is scheduled to be released on Dec. 2.
