Actor Jared Leto has previously hinted that his version of the Joker will be based on "The Killing Joke" graphic novel but a new image from JustJared has indicated he may be pulling inspiration from the Joker's first appearance in "The New 52" line.
"The New 52" was what DC called their comic book reboot back in 2011 and the image on Jared Leto's phone showcases the cover for "Detective Comics Vol. 2 Issue 1" which is the issue where the Joker returned to terrorize Batman.
At the end of the issue, the Joker hired someone to literally carve his face off. When he returned and started wearing down the Batman by first targeting his loved ones in "Death in the Family" and "Endgame," he decided to pin his old face on like a mask, symbolizing his "rebirth."
Batman managed to defeat the Joker in the end but at a severe cost. This story showcased that the Joker isn't just about dealing physical harm to the Batman but also schemes to emotionally and mentally scar his nemesis as well.
A small hint of this sadistic side of the Joker is seen in the "Suicide Squad" trailer where he says, "I'm not going to kill you. I'm just going to hurt you really, really bad."
It's a darker, more grotesque version of the Joker and a surprising choice for Leto to pick as his inspiration. However, a report from Cinema Blend points out that this issue is a perfect source for Leto to channel the Joker's psychopathic attitude.
It is unsure if the comic book is just an inspiration for Jared Leto or if "Suicide Squad" and the upcoming solo "Batman" film will also draw inspirations from the story and integrate the Joker's face-carving and his more violent, psychopathic manners into their plotline.
