'Star Wars Episode 7' plot spoilers and characters: First look at Princess Leia

Princess Leia as she appears in Star Wars: A New Hope LucasFilm

Carrie Fisher, 58, is one of the few original cast members of the 1977 "Star Wars" film who will return for "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens." She will once again portray Princess Leia, and thanks to a few leaked images from The Hashtag Show, fans now have their first look at her character's design.

The images show Princess Leia wearing a blue-grey jumpsuit that features an open button-down collar in the middle, topped by an open black vest and a black belt centered by a large, silver buckle. She also has her hair in a braid and pulled to hang over her left shoulder.

One noticeable feature is the lack of Princess Leia's iconic hair buns seen in "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope." However, according to a report from Cinema Blend, Fisher already announced back during the Star Wars Celebration event that the princess would not have her hair in buns.

Tantive IV rebel outfit, Star Wars: A New Hope LucasFilm

MakingStarWars.net points out the similarities of Princess Leia's Episode VII outfit with the Tantive IV rebel soldier uniforms. The only real difference is that she is not wearing their white, elongated helmets. The site also points out that the outfit shown in the leaked images are very similar to the costume's rough sketch they reported back in February.

Cinema Blend also says that her outfit signifies she still has a high position in the Rebellion, now referred to as the Resistance. It is unclear if she is the leader of the Resistance or one of the higher officials.

There hasn't been much information about her actual role in the film at the time of writing. According to the report from Cinema Blend, the character is the one who will command Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) to go down to the planet Jakku to retrieve Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) old lightsaber, which is where he encounters Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley).

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens in theaters this Dec. 18.
