'Star Wars Rebels' season 2 spoilers: Darth Maul faces off with Darth Vader in finale?

It was previously reported that the season 2 finale of "Star Wars Rebels" will involve a fight between Ahsoka Tano and Darth Vader, but a new report from Entertainment Weekly reveals that the finale may also see Darth Vader face off with Darth Maul.

Darth Maul was Emperor Palpatine's first apprentice during the time of Prequel Trilogy films but was killed off by the end of "The Phantom Menace." During the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" series it was revealed he had survived and was given prosthetic legs to replace the ones he lost. The former Sith will make a return in "Star Wars Rebels."

With both Vader and Maul appearing in the finale, executive producer Dave Filoni explained that there is a chance the two would come trading blows, making it the first time the two Sith Lords would fight each other. Filoni further stated that it would be perfect fan service, although he could not promise that it would indeed happen.

Accompanying the report is a new trailer for the two-part finale which focuses solely on Ezra and Darth Maul as they traverse deeper into an ancient Malachor Temple. During their conversation it is revealed that Maul still feels extreme anger toward the Sith and that he may end up becoming Ezra's new mentor.

Filoni explained to Entertainment Weekly that the focus of season 2 has been for the characters to explore the Dark Side of the Force and to be challenged by it. Ezra meeting and training under Darth Maul would be his ultimate challenge against the Dark Side.

"Maul could be a fantastic foil for Ezra, a counterpointed dark-side mentor," said Filioni. "He's this person who has been on the dark-side, that has been thrown out repeatedly from the Emperor's hierarchy but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a lot of the same tendencies as the Emperor and have the same desire for power."

The season 2 finale of "Star Wars Rebels" airs this March 30.

If you look at the Church of England’s communications all that it ever seems to highlight is the good works that Christians do to improve the temporal well-being of their neighbours. It is right to highlight these things, but they are not the primary reason for the Church’s existence.
