'Star Wars: Episode 8' release date, cast, spoilers: Finn and Rey's actual relationship teased

Star Wars - Rey and Finn Lucasfilm

Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) were the main highlights of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and many fans speculate that the two may become romantically involved in future films, particularly the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VIII." According to John Boyega, however, this is not the case.

Speaking to Variety, Boyega explained that "The Force Awakens" establishes the two characters as friends and that any semblance of a romantic twist is not teased. As far as he is concerned the two characters are just friends and this will continue as such in "Episode VIII," which is already in the middle of production.

"Yes, Finn and Rey -- they're just friends. Finn is a Stormtrooper, so he doesn't really know what's going on," the actor explained further. "So the romance thing is something that's going to be interesting in the next installment. It's not going to go the way you think it's going to go."

The actor did get to tease that the next film, which is being helmed by "Looper" director Rian Johnson, will be darker and bigger than "The Force Awakens." The actor did evade giving any particular details on how the next movie would top "The Force Awakens" and what kind of direction his character was leading into.

However, according to a report from Cinema Blend, there were faint hints of the characters getting romantically involved. In the beginning of "The Force Awakens" there is a scene where Finn asks if Rey has a boyfriend and at the very end Rey gives Finn a kiss before she flies off to find Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) now that she has the map.

Many fans speculate that neither character will end up with a romantic partner by the end of the new trilogy given that "Star Wars" is not a romance story but a space opera saga where the action and fantasy lore in outer space take precedent over romantic movie tropes.

"Star Wars: Episode VIII" will open in theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.

If you look at the Church of England’s communications all that it ever seems to highlight is the good works that Christians do to improve the temporal well-being of their neighbours. It is right to highlight these things, but they are not the primary reason for the Church’s existence.
