"Star Trek Beyond" will be the first film in the rebooted franchise that will not be helmed by J.J. Abrams, now being directed by "Fast and the Furious" veteran Justin Lin with a script by Doug Jones and actor-writer Simon Pegg. Speaking to Empire, Pegg has given fans some insight into what the new film's story and themes will be about.
According to Pegg, the third film in the series finally takes place during the USS Enterprise's five-year mission to explore deep space. The ship's crew members are said to be exhausted and have finally taken a chance to rest at a Federation outpost in deep space. It is during this time period that they encounter the villain Krall, played by Idris Elba.
Krall unleashes a vicious attack against the outpost and makes it clear that he is severely opposed to the core ideals and goals of the Federation.
"What's the point of it all?" Pegg states as the main question pushing Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew forward. "We're gathering a great community within the galaxy, but to what end? What does it all mean?"
Director Justin Lin pointed out that this film would deconstruct the very nature of the "Star Trek" franchise and since the film would release as part of the series' 50th anniversary it would take its time to delve into the core concept of the Federation, what it means and why it is so special.
The Federation's origins have been touched upon in "Star Trek: Enterprise" series and its purpose of unifying different races and discovering new worlds has always been a focal point of the franchise. But now "Star Trek Beyond" will look deeper into those core concepts to discover what it all means and what the end goal is for everyone on board.
"Star Trek Beyond" opens in theaters on July 22.
