Sony's PlayStation Virtual Reality could be getting a new controller this 2018

The Sony PlayStation Virtual Reality (VR) headset is arguably one of the best VR gadgets in the market, but its controllers are one big flaw that the VR suffers from. Sony looks to change that this 2018 with a new and specialized VR controller.

Sony has sold over two million VR units in just a year, making it one of the most competitive companies in the VR industry. This high volume of sales usually stems from Sony's reputable game developments to go along with the VR. Not to mention, it has an affordable price that does not put customers at a disadvantage.

However, Sony developed the VR headset without pairing it with a controller that is designed for VR gaming as well. The current controllers of the VR headset are the PlayStation (PS) Move controllers. These controllers debuted long before even the PlayStation 4 arrived. The controllers were mainly used for the PlayStation 3, back when motion controls became a big hit after Nintendo launched the Nintendo Wii.

While the motion controllers of Sony PlayStation are not necessarily horrible, its effectiveness in handling more advanced games leave more to be desired. In particular, the buttons of the PS Move are quite lacking, especially if compared to the more intricate games in fourth generation consoles.

Sony's upcoming controllers were filed in two separate patents in 2017. The drafts of the controllers were recently shown, and an analog stick, which was absent in the PS Move, headlines the new VR controllers.

The structure of the new controllers remain close with the PS Move, but the analog stick along with multiple buttons surrounding it could greatly enhance VR gaming.

Unlike its predecessor, the draft shows that the control buttons are much wider, making it easier to press. The triggers from behind also remain, with a wrist strap being attached from the sides.

It remains to be seen when will Sony launch these controllers, but a pair of revamped VR controllers on the horizon should excite PlayStation VR gamers nonetheless.
