'Sherlock' season 4 spoilers: Christmas special to premiere in 2015, new series in 2016

Sherlock season 3 BBC

Good news to waiting fans of popular crime drama "Sherlock." The series is coming back for its fourth season and will treat fans with a Christmas special episode, but in 2015.

Waiting fans start to count the days with pins and needles for the comeback of "Sherlock". More than a year from now, the popular detective will come back to the small screen to give light and solutions to some of the most complicated and riddled cases.

"Series Four! At last! It's always special to return to Sherlock but this time it's even more special as we're doing...a Special! Not only THAT, we'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before...The whole 'Sherlock' team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on — again!" co-creator and actor Mark Gatiss wrote in an update.

According to Yahoo, "Sherlock" will be back for a new season, but it will not be big. The report said that season 4 will only be composed of three episodes.

The report added that the series will not comeback until December 2015, when the series will show a Christmas special before the fourth season officially starts. "Sherlock" season 4 is set to air in early 2016. However, there is no exact date yet as to when the series will premiere.

The prime actors of the show are working hard on their other projects, which is one of the reasons of the delay of the new season. Martin Freeman is currently filming the new "Hobbit" film, while Benedict Cumberbatch is shooting "Black Mass", followed by "Blood Mountain".

The report continued that filming of the hit BBC drama will start in January 2015. The people behind the cameras are already working hard on the ideas and cases for the next season. Thus, no spoilers emerged yet. The show is still in the early stages of planning.

However, the show's producer Steven Moffat said that whatever "happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect". This is enough for the fans to hold on to their seats and anticipate what the show is up to when it returns to BBC next year.
