'Sherlock' season 4 and 'Doctor Who' season 9 news: Everything fans want to know

The highly popular British television crime drama "Sherlock" has been given another lifeline as the series' main protagonist, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), has no intentions of bowing out of the show. According to Vogue, Cumberbatch has stated that as long as the show is able to maintain its level of finesse, the actor will continue playing the "high-functioning sociopath."

Since Cumberbatch has a lot on his plate at the moment, fans will have to muster up sufficient amounts of patience as season 4 will not arrive until 2016. The British actor has currently signed on for roles in "Magik," "The Jungle Book Origins,"  and he is also rumored to be playing Marvel's Doctor Strange in the movie of the same title. He also has TV commitments including "The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses" and a theatrical performance of "Hamlet."

During the time that filming for season 4 officially gets underway, fans will have a special treat waiting for them. According to the Guardian, BBC has announced a Christmas Special expected to air in 2015. With a time window of about 12 months remaining, series creators Moffat and Mark Gatiss have already started exhuming minute details, much to the discomfort of impatient fans.

As for "Doctor Who," the British science-fiction television programme is also not displaying signs of slowing down because a ninth season has already been confirmed for 2015, with showrunner Steven Moffat taking up the necessary responsibilities once more.

Filming for "Doctor Who's" ninth season commences this month, which is good news. The only element about the series that will disappoint fans thoroughly is that, considering the amount of time it actually takes to produce a single season, season 9 will not be able to air until late 2015. While the reports are unconfirmed, there is a very high probability that the first episode of the show will start airing in August.

When it does air, it will feature a consecutive run with no mid-season breaks in between.
