Producer Lionel Wigram, who worked on director Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" and its sequel "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular character, recently spoke with IGN and confirmed that they are developing the script for a third film.
"We're working on a 'Sherlock Holmes 3' script," Wigram explained. "I think we would all love to do one if we could come up with something that really was really going to knock it out of the park and was going to be the best of the three. So we're working on that – it's quite hard to do."
The writing team also has to deal with the ending of the second film where Sherlock Holmes fell — supposedly to his death — at the Reichenbach Falls while fighting his nemesis Moriarty (Jarred Harris). Holmes somehow survived and appeared right at the end, camouflaged and hiding in Watson's (Jude Law) home.
Unlike the original story by Arthur Conan Doyle, Watson was present when Sherlock fell which will require the writers to come up with a logical explanation on how he survived. This was the same elaborate issue that the BBC team had to face when they worked on season 3 of the BBC series "Sherlock," starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
When asked if Downey and Jude Law are interested in coming back to reprise their roles, Wigram only responded with a short but very promising, "Very, very."
The only issue would be their schedules as Downey is still under contract to appear in several Marvel films while Ritchie and Law are currently working on "Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur." A third "Sherlock Holmes" film with all three talents will only be possible in the foreseeable future if their schedules all lineup for production.
Wigram is currently busy promoting his latest collaboration with Ritchie, the spy-thriller flick "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." starring Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill.
