Sephora's 'Underage Red' lipstick draws criticism

A makeup line sold in Sephora is raising eyebrows because of the name of one of its bold, red lipsticks.

The line is by reality star Kat Von D, and the lipstick in question is called "Underage Red." Men and women across social media are calling the title inappropriate.

"Went shopping for some makeup. How on earth is this a lipstick color?" blogger Parker Molloy tweeted on Sunday.

"Same company also has one called 'Lolita,'" another Twitter user pointed out.

"Underage Red" was launched last year, and neither Kat Von D nor Sephora has responded to the controversy. Kat's line also came under fire in 2012, after social media users caught wind of a lipstick called "Celebutard," which blends the offensive term "retard" into its name.

Disability rights advocates and actress Lauren Potter, who has Down syndrome, joined countless others in calling for the lipstick to be pulled. Kat defended the term, however.

"That name was inspired by the silliness of people who become famous for no reason outside attention seeking behavior," she tweeted. "I think it's a funny, lighthearted stab at how silly people can be. (Both the celebrity and those who subscribe to them.)"

"At the end of the day, it's just a [expletive] lipstick."

Sephora, on the other hand, apologised for the faux pas.

"It has come to our attention that the name of one shade of lipstick we carry has caused offense to some of our clients and others," the company said in a statement to CTV News. "We are deeply sorry for that."

Makeup giant MAC also has a lipgloss called "Underage," as well as other suggestive product names, like "Kinky." Nail polish brands OPI, Naughty Nailz, and Essie are also known for their provocative, and sometimes offensive, product names.
