'Rick and Morty' season 3 premiere date March 2017; Rick getting out of prison quickly

"Rick and Morty" has proven to be one of the most successful animated shows in television today and the series was renewed for a third season just three episodes into season 2. However, as reported by Den of Geek, this doesn't mean season 3 will air right away; as a matter of fact, season 3 may not launch until March 2017.

At the end of season 2, the character Mr. Poopybutthole mentioned that the next season wouldn't premiere for another year and a half, which points to March 2017. While at first glance this doesn't mean anything since it comes from the word of a character written on the show, there is still some level of truth to be taken.

It is important to note that the character is often viewed as a representation of the writers in the series itself and there are debates on whether or not the rest of the show's cast of characters actually see or interact with Mr. Poopybutthole. It is possible that this character was added in simply as a means for the writers to directly communicate with the audience.

Adult Swim has yet to announce an official release date but series' writer Dan Guterman did give another clue regarding the March schedule as well as some insight on the next season's plot while speaking with Den of Geek a few months back.

"I don't think anybody wants to do a third season that simply spends a whole bunch of episodes dealing with a situation that we created at the end of the second season," Guterman stated regarding Rick's imprisonment at the season 2 finale. "So I think that's a non-spoiler way of saying things should be okay pretty quickly."

When asked what the show would focus on if the season 2 predicament will be solved so soon, Guterman responded by stating they would keep the fans "posted on that in the form of our cartoon."

While his statement is a response to the question regarding the story, it also points out that announcements will be made through the cartoon itself, again further hinting that the March 2017 release date is likely to push through given that it was announced through the aforementioned medium.
