'Reign' season 3 preview: Francis' death is right around the corner

Time is ticking for Francis, King of France. Executive producer Laurie McCarthy confirmed earlier that Toby Regbo's character will die this season, and his demise may happen very soon.

Based on the photos released by The CW and posted on TVLine, Francis' wife Mary (Adelaide Kane) is joined by Bash (Torrance Coombs) and Charles (Spencer MacPherson) as she stares at the bed of her husband in the fourth episode titled "The Price."

Another photo shows Mary weeping beside Francis as the two share a highly emotional moment where the King of France seems to be saying his last goodbye to his wife.

The confirmation of Francis' death was relayed by McCarthy to Entertainment Weekly earlier this month, saying that she decided to announce it earlier instead of building it up during the season so that the viewers can start getting used to it since Francis's death is inevitable in the story.

"I wanted it to be an emotional journey that we all went on and that we could all feel the highs and lows of, and I wanted it to be a love story. I didn't want it to be something that shocked the fans or really anybody. I needed to process it, too," McCarthy said.

However, McCarthy warned fans that Francis's death will be heartbreaking but it will not be lingering. But before Francis's death, he and Mary will fight to secure their throne in the third episode of "Reign" season 3.

According to the synopsis for the episode, "When King Antoine (guest star Ben Aldridge) unexpectedly returns to Court, Mary must help Francis hide his weakening condition long enough to secure his family's future. With the Throne in jeopardy and time running out, they must turn to an unlikely ally in need of redemption."

"Reign" season 3 airs Fridays on The CW.
