'Red Dead Redemption 2' release date: one reason why game is still unannounced

"Red Dead Redemption 2" still exists mainly just in the minds of fans and in online rumors, and that may have been by design.

In a recent speech at the MKM Partners Investors Day in New York City last Nov. 19, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed that the long waits between the release dates of sequels for their popular non-sports franchises such as "Grand Theft Auto" and "Red Dead Redemption" have been somewhat intentional, Gamespot reported.

According to Zelnick, when it comes to those types of games, the company is better served to space out release dates in order to foster greater anticipation and hype among the fan base.

Zelnick added that releasing games such as "Red Dead Redemption 2" so close to its predecessor could in effect be counter-productive, serving to lessen the impact it might have had fans been asked to wait for just a while longer. He added that it's one of the reasons why those games are not delivered on an annual basis.

Zelnick also confessed that another reason behind why those games take so long to be announced is the development process for them is lengthier, although he did indicate that they are working to create more reasonable timelines for their major franchises such as "Red Dead Redemption."

In related news, even without any official word, the rumor mill is still active when it comes to "Red Dead Redemption 2."

According to Latin One, the next game in the series might soon feature the same character switching mechanic that was seen in "Grand Theft Auto 5."

It's unclear as of now who the characters will be, but this addition could make exploring the vast expanse of the Wild West much easier in the second installment of the franchise.

No release date has been confirmed for "Red Dead Redemption 2," although fans expect it to make its debut by next year.
