Pope Francis has spoken of the need to take decisive action in relation to cases of sexual abuse.

The Catholic Church has been hit by devastating sex abuse scandals worldwide in recent years.

Continuing along the lines set out by his predecessor, Benedict XVI, the Pope called for the promotion of measures to protect minors and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.

He also affirmed his desire to see victims of abuse receive necessary assistance, as he gave assurances that they were in his prayers.

The call was made during an audience with Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Muller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

A communique released after the meeting said the recommendations were "important for the Church's witness and credibility".
