'Person of Interest' season 5 spoilers: no happy ending but showrunners promise fans will be 'rewarded'

 CBS

"Person of Interest" season 5 is touted as the final season for the show and as such, the number of episodes has been reduced to only 13. Former seasons had more than 20 episodes. Despite this, executive producer Greg Plageman promised in a report from Variety that they did make the final season for the fans.

"The real fun of this season was that even though we had a reduced episode order it became kind of freeing creatively. Jonah Nolan and I made the decision that if this was it, let's go for it and let's write to it," he said. " It's been a long time our fans have been waiting for this season and I can't wait for them to watch it. I think they're going to feel really rewarded."

Plageman also expressed surprise at how strong the fanbase for the series was and he surmised that a reason why the show had such a large following was because it always managed to stay fresh and innovative, moving from a premise that was built on science fiction and steering it into what can be classifed as science fact.

However, despite the promise that the season will cater to the fans and those who have been following the show loyally since it premiered, Nolan explained that the show will not end on a very high note for the characters or for the Machine.

According to Nolan, he was never a fan of writing happy endings and this will prove true for "Person of Interest." The writer explained that Finch (Michael Emerson) stated as far back as the season 1 premiere that everything would end horribly and Nolan confirms that the season 5 finale will fulfill this promise.

However, according to a report from USA Today, this does not necessarily mean everything will go awry as there are indications the story could go on in a spin-off series which sees Finch fighting crime and getting involved with cyber-security once again.
