Although "Person of Interest" season 5 has not yet been confirmed to be the last season for the show, the showrunners, writers and cast are treating it as such. This will guarantee that the series will have a satisfying finale while still being open in case it gets renewed. However, with finales come important twists and character casualties.
It's not uncommon for big twists, revelations and casualties to occur during a show's season finale, and all the more so when the episode could be the series' ender. "Person of Interest" star Michael Emerson confirmed as much in a report by IndieWire.
"I think because we're thinking of this like an ending — although I'm guessing it will be ambiguous enough to be pursued later on — it's an ending," the actor explained. "Splashy endings usually involve casualties. So I think we're likely to either lose characters or have them somehow transformed."
It is heavily speculated that Emerson's character Harold Finch might die in this season as he will struggle between the moral choices of identifying victim from suspect and with his struggles rebuilding the Machine, as explained by the actor. The Machine also called Emerson's character as its "Father," implying that the latter has now gained a strong sentimental attachment to the device.
However, other than Finch dying, there is no indication of who might be killed off. Sarah Shahi has been confirmed to be back for this season and there are speculations that she may bite the dust during the season 5 finale, although this has not been hinted at thus far.
All four seasons of "Person of Interest" are now available for streaming via Netflix. This move is to introduce more viewers to the show. If successful, then it is possible that the series may be renewed for another season or, as many other shows have done lately, the network may cancel it and "Person of Interest" may instead find a new home on Netflix.
