Oprah talks about Selma film: We never expected to be at the Oscars

"We never expected to be at the Oscars," said Oprah Winfrey.

A lot of people seem to think that the movie Selma has been snubbed at the 2015 Academy Awards, but producer Oprah Winfrey is just happy that it even got recognition in the first place, saying that "we never expected to be at the Oscars."

Selma is a historical drama based on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the marches he led for voting rights. And while the film did not win the Best Picture category, the movie's soundtrack "Glory" by Common and John Legend managed to win Best Original Song.

Entertainment Tonight talked to Oprah after the awards show about the film and the song "Glory," and the former talk show host said that the whole process has just been wonderful.

"It's been a journey, from the very first moment that David Oyelowo had asked me to help him with this film," Winfrey told ET's Brooke Anderson. "We started out doing our little film and we never expected to be at the Oscars. And now you're at the Oscars, and Common and John Legend are singing the song."

Oprah was caught off guard when "Glory" won the Oscar for Best Original Song, since she was expecting them to announce Common and John Legend instead of their actual given names - John Stevens and Lonnie Lynn.

"It's so funny, because when they announced John Stevens and Lonnie, I know them as John Legend and Common, so I'm like 'Who's John Stevens, I didn't even know he wrote a song!'" she laughingly shared. "There was a moment when I wasn't sure that we actually had won it."

The whole cast and crew of Selma were emotional over the win, and cameras even caught Oprah wiping the tears from Oyelowo's face.

"He's now like family. Watching him cry made me want to cry and then I felt like well, we're all gonna be in the ugly cry, and that's not good," she said.
