Nintendo NX release date, features, leaked in online surveys

The Nintendo NX remains a mystery as Nintendo has yet to make any official statements regarding the console's features and release date. However, two separate surveys that have leaked online now give some insight into what the NX will be capable of and when it may hit store shelves.

As per Express.co, a GFK survey leaked online indicates that the console may feature backwards compatibility and Nintendo may launch a monthly subscription system that would allow players to rent or buy old and new games digitally through the Nintendo online shop.

Most consoles have backwards compatibility. The Wii U can run select Wii games, the PS4 is now starting to bring in PS2 games and the Xbox One is now able to run Xbox 360 titles. The Nintendo 3DS is capable of running DS games and the PS Vita can run PSP titles as well, so it comes as no surprise that the NX is also being considered to have this feature.

It is also implied in the report that the NX will open the doors for Nintendo IPs to reach out to other consoles. This not only means that NX hardware might be compatible with the PS4 or Xbox One but it may mean "Mario" or "Legend of Zelda" titles might see PS4 or Xbox One ports later down the line.

Another big feature hinted at by the survey is that the Nintendo NX may indeed be a hybrid system comprising both a home console and a portable device.

The survey from Gamestop, spotted by GoNintendo, indicates that the NX will see a 2016 launch. This is indicated by the fact that the survey puts the Nintendo NX alongside other 2016 hardware releases such as the PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift.

If this proves true, Nintendo is likely going to make an announcement at this year's E3 or in a special Nintendo Direct.
