It is undeniable that a lot has happened for gaming company Nintendo in recent months. The Japanese-based video game developer has revealed that it is not interested in integrating its technology with virtual reality (VR) support or 4K resolution capability. The reason is that it feels that the demand is not big enough for it to make a substantial investment in such endeavors.
In an interview with Les Numeriques, Nintendo France's managing director Philippe Lavoue stated that the company does not feel that VR capabilities can generate a spur of interest for fans in their games. In his view, it is apparent that players of their mainstream titles are more inclined to exclusive packages, rather than spending excessive amounts of cash in order to gain access to the advancement in gaming technologies.
Examples of some products that players will have to splurge on are VR headsets, 4K televisions or monitors, and other related gaming paraphernalia.
On top of that, Lavoue asserts that VR and 4K technology are quite new, which means that it could potentially be unwise to invest in them so early without them being tested in the mass market. Furthermore, there is a lot of doubt on the application of these technologies in terms of what Nintendo titles have to offer compared to that of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.
The Nintendo Switch is marketed for those who want to play on-the-go, which is something that 4K and VR do not necessarily meet if applied to a contemporary Switch user. As of now, these technologies are enjoyed by a niche market of gamers who are looking to push the limits of their gaming experience. Given the rapid sales of the Nintendo Switch, there is very reason for the company to doubt the current trajectory of success that it has so far.
