The new trailer for "Terminator Genisys" drops the bomb regarding one of the biggest twists in the film's plot. It reveals that there is a new Terminator in the movie and it is not simply a machine sent back in time to kill Sarah or John Conner. The trailer shows that John Connor, future leader of the human resistance, is the Terminator.
This confirms a long-gestating rumor on the Internet that John, played by Jason Clarke, would become the film's main villain. He is neither human nor machine but is revealed to be something of a unique hybrid of both. Scenes from the trailer reveal that he can disintegrate and reform at will and is far more advanced than the T-800 or T-1000.
According to the film's official synopsis, John sends Kyle Reese back in time to save his mother, Sarah, as she is being hunted by a Terminator. However, when Kyle arrives in the past, he quickly discovers that the timelines have changed and now, Sarah is already equipped with the knowledge and skills to fight the machines.
Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as the titular T-800 Terminator but this time, he was sent back even further in time and eventually became Sarah's foster father after her parents were killed. The trailer shows this older T-800 fighting the T-800 (also played by Schwarzenegger) in the 1984 original film, showing even further how distorted this new film's timeline really is.
Along with the new trailer is a new poster and this one-sheet holds nothing back as it features John Connor front and center. The image reveals John's new machine form, with Kyle Reese, the T-800, and Sarah Connor in the background.
ComicBookMovie reports that "Terminator Genisys" is the first of a planned trilogy so it is possible that the John Connor twist is just the beginning of something new for the franchise. The film may yet hold other surprises as it lays down the path for future installments.
"Terminator Genisys" hits theaters nationwide on July 1.
