National adviser to support catholic Church of England parishes

A new post is being developed to help and support catholic Church of England parishes.

The role of National Adviser in Catholic Evangelism will be combined with the role of Vicar of St Matthew's, Carver Street, in Sheffield.

The post is the result of discussions between the Bishop of Sheffield, the Bishop of Beverley and Church Army.

It will be supported financially by several Catholic charities.

The role of National Adviser in Catholic Evangelism is intended to promote Anglican catholic models of evangelisation within the Church of England.

Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham, Martyn Snow, said: “It is now widely recognised that the church finds itself in a new kind of mission context in the UK and that much of our nation needs to be re-evangelised. We are delighted by the prospect of this new post.”

He added: “The Anglo-catholic constituency has invaluable insights to share with the wider church, not least in the area of evangelism and this role is intended both to encourage the growth of churches within this constituency and share learning with others.”

The parish of St Matthew's, Carver Street, is home to Church Army's Wilson Carlile Centre, a redevelopment of its former training college and hub for mission training and research.

St Matthew's Church is an Anglo-catholic church and was part of the Catholic Revival in the Church of England.

The process of filling the new post is likely to get underway in the autumn.
