Maidstone Council says no to lap dancing venue

Maidstone Council has rejected an application for a new lap dancing venue close to the town centre.

The application was unpopular with local residents who felt it was an unsuitable addition to an area being regenerated by the council.

They were supported by the Christian Legal Centre, which added that the venue on Bank Street was close to schools, churches and shops.

Over a hundred letters opposing the application were sent to Maidstone Council prior to the hearing on Monday.

Solicitor Michael Phillips, who represented opponents, said that the go ahead for a lap dancing venue would have turned Bank Street into a sex street.

Andrea Williams, chief executive of the Christian Legal Centre welcomed the council's decision.

"We are delighted with the Council’s decision which proves that it is possible for lap dancing licenses to be challenged successfully, and that Councils recognise the harm and risks posed by permitting sex establishments to run in their city centres," she said.

"We would encourage anyone who wishes to resist a sex licence applications to contact us. The Christian Legal centre will support you, because we recognise the adverse effects of such establishments on communities.

"After yesterday’s outcome, we are confident that more victories can be achieved.”
