'Kingdom Hearts 2.8 release date: 'Final Chapter Prologue' confirmed to arrive December

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue Square-Enix

Just a few days ahead of E3, Square Enix has released a brand-new trailer for "Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue." The trailer gives a better look at the three games that further tell the tale of the Keyblade Wars and the events leading to the upcoming "Kingdom Hearts III."

The first segment was that of the HD remaster of "Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance," which was originally released for the Nintendo 3DS. The game focuses on the training Sora and Riku undergo as they prepare for the eventual return of Master Xehanort.

"Kingdom Hearts x [chi] Back Cover" focuses on telling the story of the Foretellers. Using HD cinematics this short animated film will further explore the lore and backstory of the series, particularly the backstory leading into the rise of Master Xehanort, the main villain of the entire franchise.

Last in the compilation game is "Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage." This game takes place after the events of the original "Birth By Sleep" on the PSP and is told in the perspective of Aqua, one of the original Keyblade wielders.

"Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue" is also slated to make an appearance at this year's E3, explains a report from the official PlayStation blog. It is undetermined if a playable demo will be present but it will keep the fans busy until Square-Enix officially releases the final game in the franchise, "Kingdom Hearts III."

IGN also confirms that along with the new trailer Square-Enix has confirmed that "Kingdom Hearts x [chi]" is coming to Europe. The game started as a browser title in Japan but later expanded for iOS and Android when it was released in the U.S. this past April.

According to the official trailer the game is set to release for the PS4 this coming December. A more specific release date has yet to be announced.
