'Just Cause 3' release news: Multiplayer was a consideration

A multiplayer mode was reportedly taken into consideration for "Just Cause 3."

In an interview with Gamespot, "Just Cause 3" director Roland Lesterlin revealed that he and the other folks over at Avalanche Studios did talk about multiplayer "a lot" before apparently deciding against it.

According to Lesterlin, the decision to ultimately omit multiplayer from "Just Cause 3" boiled down to the development team simply wanting to focus more on their single player offering above anything else. Lesterlin explained that with all the updates that needed to be made to the game's physics and its gameplay mechanics, the decision was simply made to focus more on those aspects of "Just Cause 3," thus leading to them not having enough time to add anything else.

The game's director also pointed out that despite the fact that "Just Cause 3" doesn't have a multiplayer component, the social features that are now part of modern consoles still allow players to enjoy a community-oriented experience as they play the game.

Lesterlin revealed that they focused on developing things such as leaderboards for the game so that players could still compete with one another even without the conventional multiplayer component.

Part of the reason for why many fans were hopeful for a multiplayer component being added to the game was that "Just Cause 2" had such a good example of it.

According to Game Rant, the multiplayer mod made for "Just Cause 2" became highly popular and led to many hoping a version of it would be included in the sequel.

Interestingly enough, Lesterlin did not emphatically say that there will no longer be a multiplayer component added to "Just Cause 3."

According to him, Avalanche Studios has not ruled out adding a multiplayer component to "Just Cause" games, although it's unclear if that was referring to the third installment of the franchise or to future games down the line.
