'Jessica Jones' season 2 release date, spoilers: Season launches in 2018, after 'Defenders'

Jessica Jones Netflix

Entertainment Weekly reporter Natalie Abrams has stated via Twitter that "Jessica Jones" season 2 will happen but not until the studios are done with "Defenders," "Iron Fist" and "Luke Cage." This was later confirmed by Netflix head Ted Sarandos during the recent TCA press tour, according to a report from Screen Crush.

According to the report, the current schedule is to get "Luke Cage" season 1 out this year by September. "Iron Fist" and "Defenders" would then follow by 2017. It is only after the launch of "Defenders" that the studios will begin working on season 2 of "Jessica Jones," season 3 of "Daredevil" and the first season of "The Punisher."

With that in mind it means all three mentioned shows will not get to premiere until 2018, with "Daredevil" season 3 most likely getting the highest priority due to the success of the first two seasons. It is undetermined whether "Jessica Jones" season 2 or "The Punisher" would then launch one right after the other or simultaneously.

Reporter Chris E. Hayner also teased via Twitter that there might be a chance of Jon Bernthal reprising his role as Frank Castle aka the Punisher for "Defenders," allowing the team-up show to properly set up the events for "The Punisher" season 1. This will also ring true for "Daredevil" season 3 and "Jessica Jones" season 2.

"Defenders" will see Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) team up as they battle a threat too dangerous for any of them to handle on their own. It is speculated that this alliance will not last long as the members might branch back to work on their own.

When "Jessica Jones" season 2 does begin it will be dealing with the family dynamics of the main characters and will explore Jessica's personal trauma after she had killed the first season's main villain.

"Jessica Jones" season 2 will premiere in 2018.
