'Jason Bourne' spoilers: Director Paul Greengrass discusses plot and action

 Universal Pictures

Director Paul Greengrass and actor Matt Damon have returned for "Jason Bourne," the fourth official entry in the "Bourne" franchise, excluding the spin-off starring Jeremy Renner. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Greengrass has given a little bit of insight into what kind of action and story fans can expect in the new film.

The director revealed that one of the key action set pieces will be taking place amidst an austerity riot in Athens, Greece. The exact details of this sequence are not divulged but Greengrass does reveal that it involves Bourne (Matt Damon) meeting up with Nikki Parsons (Julia Stiles), hinting they may have been communicating since the end of "The Bourne Ultimatum."

"Life out in the cold isn't working for either of them," Greengrass explained in the report. "Nicky uses the riot for cover to meet with him, but she gets followed, and that sets the plot in motion."

During this chase sequence Bourne then steals a motorbike from one of the enemies following Nikki although it is unclear at this point where else the chase will go and how it will end. However, fans are speculating that this takes place somewhere near the beginning of the movie, meaning Nikki and Bourne will eventually meet and stick together.

Fans also speculate that because Nikki is using the riot to meet him secretly, it is possible that Nikki already has new information for Bourne. This was hinted in the trailer when Nikki reveals that Bourne still has information to learn despite him already discovering his true name and how he entered the program that turned him into a weapon.

Despite the time that has passed between "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Jason Bourne," Greengrass does confirm that Bourne is still in top condition for action and that actor Matt Damon has gone through rigorous training to properly portray this character at the peak of his combat skills, indicating that despite being in the shadows Bourne has still been active.

"Jason Bourne" opens in theaters this July 29.
