HTC One M8 vs LG G3 vs Galaxy S5: Flagship smartphones' impressive performance, features

With HTC, Samsung and LG releasing its recent flagship smartphones, users can't help but compare the HTC One M8, Galaxy S5 and the LG G3 when it comes to their design, performance and features.

In terms of physical appearance, these three phones do have specific variations with the HTC One M8's brushed metal design, the S5's polycarbonate dotted rear and the G3's faux brushed metal panel.

Favorable comments have been raked in by HTC when it made the decision to put in the two stereo speakers right in the front panel, one above and the other below the screen. The phone weights 160 grams and comes with a 5-inch Super LCD display with a resolution of 441 ppi. Thanks to the Corning Gorilla Glass, M8's impressive display is not without protection.

With the dust- and water-resistant Galaxy S5, mixed criticisms have surfaced because of its unappealing polycarbonate rear. Nonetheless, the 5.1-inch screen is also covered with Corning Glass 3 and comes with a resolution of 432 ppi. Compared to HTC's One M8, the S5 is lighter.

On the other hand, the LG G3 is bigger but not necessarily heavier than the two other phones. The front panel sports a True HD-IPS + LCD display measuring 5.5 inches and comes with a 1440 x 2560 resolution. Similar to the HTC One M8 and the Galaxy S5, the G3's display is protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

In terms of hardware and operating system, these three devices are powered by a quad-core Krait 400 processor brought on by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset. The HTC One M8 comes with two versions of processors that will be distributed depending on one's location. For customers in the U.S., Europe, Middle East and Africa, the M8 is available at 2.3GHz whereas those in Asia will obtain the 2.5GHz variant. The latter comes with the MSM8974AB Snapdragon 801 series.

The three devices also come with microSD card slots that support cards of up to 128 GB. While the HTC One M8 and Galaxy S5 are offered in their 16 GB and 32 GB version with 2 GB of RAM, the G3 is made available in its 16 GB and 32 GB variants with 2 GB and 3 GB of RAM, respectively. Moreover, all of these devices run on the Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

For their cameras, the HTC One M8 comes with the lowest resolution at 4-megapixels, although it has been tried and tested to capture clear pictures in low-light environments. The Galaxy S5 sports a 16-megapixel rear camera that includes features such as HD and phase detection whereas the LG G3 comes with a 13-megapixel rear camera with OIS+ and dual-LED flash.

The LG G3 comes with the largest battery size at 3000 mAh while the Galaxy S5 follows at 2800 mAh and the HTC One M8 at 2600 mAh.

Off-contract, these phones' prices range between $460 and $555 for their 16 GB versions. The LG G3 costs $460 while the Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with a tag of $520. The HTC One M8 has been made available for $555.
