'Hellboy 3': Ron Perlman gives updates, nixes concept of crowdfunding film

Hellboy 2 Universal Pictures

Actor Ron Perlman struck a chord with the fans when he posted on Twitter that "Hellboy 3" needs to happen. In a recent interview with Variety, the actor finally gave an update regarding the film's development and if the movie would ever see the light of day.

According to the report, director Guillermo del Toro does have a story in mind but did not confirm if a draft script has already been completed or if one still needs to be done. Perlman also confirmed that he and del Toro haven't spoken for a while but they did converse intermittently before and that the director did share some details of the third film's plot.

Perlman explained that the franchise was always planned to have a beginning, middle, and end and that the fans deserve a proper resolution to the series. He noted that the third film may focus on Hellboy either fulfilling his destiny to become the Beast of Apocalypse or if he would sacrifice himself somehow to stop this fate.

After Perlman initially posted his desire to move forward with "Hellboy 3," fans have initiated a crowdfunding move to finance the film. According to a report from Digital Spy, Perlman wants the film to happen sooner than later but stated that the fans shouldn't have to resort to crowdfunding to get it done.

"I wouldn't want to be involved in a crowdfunding campaign,"  the actor explained. "I don't think it's the fans' job to fund a movie, I think it's up to the people who do it professionally. I think it's the fans' job to sit back and buy popcorn and coke and watch the movie and enjoy it."

Development for "Hellboy 3" is still in question. Del Toro is currently finishing up his work for his upcoming flick "Crimson Peak" and is slated to start working on "Pacific Rim 2" immediately afterwards. He is also trying to get a "Justice League Dark" film off the ground and is still trying to green light a "At the Mountains of Madness" film.

The "Hellboy" films are based on the comic series by Mike Mignola. The first film hit theaters back in 2004 while its sequel, "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," was released in 2008.
