"Hawaii Five-0" started with a lot of momentum and some fans argue that it is a far better show that the original series from the late 1960s to 1980s. That momentum is quickly dying and reports from TV Series Finale indicate that the show may not even make it to a sixth season.
According to the report, the show's ratings are dropping below the 1.30 mark for the 18-49 age demographic. Most series need to hit a 1.60 average rating in order for the networks to justify investing in another season and "Hawaii Five-0" is not achieving those numbers. It's hanging in there but it's not where it should be if it wants to continue on.
Cartermatt reports that the show already saw a major decline in viewer ratings since season 4. The damage was compounded when the show was moved to a Friday schedule where it had to directly compete against "Shark Tank," the highest rated TV series for that time schedule.
Cross-overs with other shows such as "NCIS: Los Angeles" may not have done any good either as the latter series is also facing possible cancelation. "NCIS: Los Angeles" is rumored to be cancelled with no definitive end to its cliffhanger finale.
According to a chart by Zap2It, "Hawaii Five-0" has a 45 to 49 percent chance of renewing for season 6. Those numbers are very slim and it may be possible that CBS would slash off the show. This would enable the network to invest in its properties that are still ranking in numbers, such as "The Big Bang Theory" and "Elementary."
"Hawaii Five-0" is a remake of the original television series "Hawaii Five-O" which also aired on CBS from 1968 to 1980, running a total of twelve seasons filled with 279 episodes. The rebooted series was developed by Peter M. Lenkov, Roberto Orci, and Alex Kurtzman. The latter two are now famous for their work on the rebooted "Star Trek" films.
The season 5 finale will be a two-parter episode that will both air on May 8. Part 1 is episode 24 "Luapo'i" or "Prey" while Part 2 is episode 25 "A Make Kāua" or "Until We Die."
