One of the remaining mysteries left open in "Guardians of the Galaxy" was the identity of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) father. A report from Heroic Hollywood claimed that several sources state Star-Lord's father to be Captain Mar-Vell, a claim director James Gunn immediately denied via his Facebook page.
Gunn first explained that this would be the only time he would comment regarding any rumor about the film he is working on and later elaborated his disappointment in "spoiler culture." He then went on to deny the claim of Captain Mar-Vell being Star-Lord's father.
"The rumors surrounding Quill's parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren't even close to the truth. I don't know how people come up with this stuff, but it certainly isn't through legitimate sources," he stated.
The initial report from Heroic Hollywood explained that in the first film, Star-Lord's father was revealed to be of an ancient race made of pure light, similar to Captain Mar-Vell in the comic books. It was then speculated that this Mar-Vell would later cause Carol Danvers to gain her powers, turning her into the female Captain Marvel aka Ms. Marvel.
However, with Gunn's denial of the rumor, everything goes back to the drawing board. Other candidates for the paternal role that fans often consider are Adam Warlock, who was seen in the first film but only in his cocoon state, or even a being from the future given that the old "Guardians of the Galaxy" comic books took place in the far future.
Gunn's statement did not just address the rumor being spread but also addressed the "spoiler culture" spreading today.
"Since when is a plot spoiler a 'scoop?' Is this really what fandom wants to know? Plot details in movies ahead of time? I got in this business because I love movies, and I think most film journalists are the same way. And spoiling plot details doesn't add to the enjoyment of the film-going experience."
