With the "Guardians of the Galaxy" sequel already in the works, director James Gunn was able to provide some bits of information about what fans can expect of the upcoming film, including new characters and solving mysteries from the first installment of the franchise.

Speaking at Variety's Entertainment & Technology Summit, the 44-year-old director spilled some beans and said that he has been working on "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" for the past few months.

"I spent all day on August 1, the day the first movie was released, writing Guardians 2," Gunn said. "I was so excited about it and I was finally able to let go of the last one and begin the second one. I always saw this as a universe, not just as one story."

After the first "Guardians" movie attained smash hit status in this summer's box office, speculations have already surfaced about the sequel having more female characters. While Gunn did not confirm whether such rumor is true or not, he revealed that all five original Guardians will be returning for the sequel.

According to Variety, Gunn also mentioned that fans should look forward to new members joining the second movie and that the new Guardians are to "uncover some secrets posed in the first [Guardians movie]."

While Marvel and Disney have attained considerable success in their own takes on crossovers, Gunn shunned the speculations that a crossover is in the works for "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Star Wars."

"Star Wars was a long time ago," Gunn stated. "It would have to be time travel."

With the original Guardians returning, fans can look forward to the same cast members reprising their roles in the forthcoming sequel; these include Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/ Star Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Vin Diesel (Groot) and Bradley Cooper (Rocket).

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" has been set to hit theaters on July 28, 2017.
