'Gravity Falls' season 2 finale release date - what to expect

Gravity Falls Disney XD

The penultimate episode of "Gravity Falls" season 2 aired as far back as Nov. 23, 2015 but now an official release date for the finale has now been released, courtesy of a report from Variety. Fans of the hit cartoon show won't have to wait too long as the last episode will air this coming Feb. 15.

The series premiered as far back as 2012 and has since been following an unconventional release schedule, with weeks or sometimes even months going in between each new installment.

"Weirdmageddon Part 3: Take Back the Falls" is directed by Stephen Sandoval and was penned by series' veterans Mark Rizzo, Jeff Rowe, Josh Weinstein and Shion Takeuchi alongside series' creator and executive producer Alex Hirsch.

The official synopsis for the episode reads as follows:

"Ford discovers Bill's true motives and then a final confrontation with Bill leads to the Pines family's ultimate fate and greatest sacrifice."

According to the report, an announcement from Disney XD was launched on Facebook and YouTube but this has since been made private.

Disney XD also confirms that a special episode will air on Feb. 8 and this will focus on the mythos of the show and will be hosted by the character Time Baby. This special feature might not be considered part of the main storyline as it is a behind-the-scenes special but it is also a big indication that Time Baby is indeed coming back in the finale episode.

The report also points out that the second season will be the last, meaning the upcoming finale episode will officially end the series as a whole. According to Forbes, this is because Hirsch wanted the series to have a definite beginning, middle and end instead of allowing it to keep on going and getting stale in the process, a problem that plagues many shows on television.
