'GTA 6' release date coming by 2018? What to expect

Rockstar Games has given no official announcement regarding "Grand Theft Auto VI" since the company is currently busy with "Grand Theft Auto V," which just hit Microsoft Windows with an added FPS mode that radically changes the gameplay. However, a new rumor suggests that the game studio may release a sixth title by 2018.

According to a report from Master Herald, Rockstar Games might make an announcement soon that they will release a sixth title in the main series by 2018, which would be five years after the release of "Grand Theft Auto V." This would mirror the five-year gap between "GTA IV," which came out in 2008, and "GTA V," which came out in 2013.

However, there is a little bit of discrepancy as the gap between "GTA III" and "GTA IV" was a total of seven years. "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," while a separate game in its own right, still falls under the "GTA III" trilogy.

Master Herald's report also says that actor Ryan Gosling is allegedly going to voice the lead character. Supplementing this is a report from RealtyToday which also states that Gosling's wife, actress Eva Mendez, is rumored to play the game's female lead. Neither the actors nor Rockstar has confirmed or denied these rumors at the time of writing.

It's not even sure if "GTA VI" will have only one main lead character or if it will follow the trend started by "GTA V" and have several characters that gamers can control simultaneously. The latter has proven successful and also allows for a deeper, varied story similar to numerous gangster films and television series that the games are inspired by.

Another report from the Latino Post also states that Rockstar Games may focus on releasing "Red Dead Redemption 2" before focusing their attention on a sixth "Grand Theft Auto" title.

"The risk of just releasing more games is that you end up just bulking up your release schedule and that isn't really what consumers want. Consumers want better, not more," stated Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick in the report.

Take Two Interactive has served as the franchise's primary distributor.
