Gospel artist Bobby Bovell: Gods the star, not me

It would be easy to grow a big head if you’d just been nominated for a MOBO Award but Bobby Bovell is just grateful to God and all the mentors who helped him along the way to notoriety.

Speaking to Premier Gospel’s Dave P, Bobby recognised the influence good mentors had had on his career in music.

He said: “I’ve been lucky in that I’ve been rich with the number of mentors I've had, my father, Dennis Bovell being one of them. He taught me what it means to be a leader and a musician.

“Muyiwa, (Riversongz and Premier Gospel Station Director) is another, and Pastors Eddie Hypolite and Colin Stewart. The list isn't exhaustive."

The MOBO Awards take place in Glasgow on October 6 and Bobby is excited about the light being cast on British gospel music.

"I'm excited about this award and what it mean for the message we're trying to get out there. It's an honour to suddenly have this platform for other people to hear what I do and see another side of my ministry."

His nomination follows the release of his critically acclaimed album, Emergent EcleKtic, earlier this year.

During the interview, he revealed his enthusiasm for the UK gospel scene.

“The MOBO's are great for UK Gospel in the sense that people can see that the quality of music we put out is world class," he said.

"It raises the profile of what we do. There are so many wonderful artists and so much great music coming out of this place. I mean it's insane!"

The MOBOs may honour the artists, but Bobby was clear about the source of his talents and where the true recognition should go.

He said: “One of the biggest milestones for me has been recognising that this gift is not about me. I'm not the star, God is.

"Recognising that, and allowing God to be the centre and focus of what I'm doing has brought me to the place I am today."

Bobby recently performed at a sold out Premier Gospel Live concert during the summer. Premier Gospel Station Director and popular artist Muyiwa said he wanted to help put the spotlight on UK gospel music and artists like Bobby.

“He’s an incredible live performer,” Muyiwa said.
