'Gigantic' news: Free-to-play hero shooter shuts down in July

After a long time in development, "Gigantic" is finally shutting down. Motiga

Free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA)-slash-hero shooter hybrid "Gigantic" just received its last patch and will officially shut down its servers on July 31.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the January Update is the final content update for Gigantic, and the game servers will be discontinued on July 31, 2018," the team at Motiga writes on the announcement of the game's termination.

According to the statement, the main reason why they decided to pull the plug on the title was because "Gigantic" did not resonate with as many players as they had hoped. To put it simply, it just did not have the kind of player base that can sustain a free-to-play game, especially one that was trying to compete with the likes of "DOTA 2," "League of Legends" and "Smite."

And, well, it is true. Despite having an all-time peak of 8,000 players (not bad for a somewhat unknown game), that number quickly dropped and, over the last few months, "Gigantic" only had about an average of a hundred players on Steam.

While unfortunate, the team over at Motiga decided to leave a small gift to the few players who stuck around this long. With the latest (and final) update, all heroes in the game will be free and the purchasing of any kind of microtransaction has been disabled. In addition to that, those that were holding on to the in-game currency in case of a rainy day will still be able to spend them and purchase items at a discounted price.

As a final farewell to their community and the people that might still be playing until July, Motiga released the final content patch for "Gigantic" that contains a new hero, several new skins and some last-minute balance changes for the heroes so that the last few months can still feel just a little bit fresh.
