'Frozen 2' release date, plot news: sequel may be delayed as studios focus on holiday special

 Disney

"Frozen 2" is officially in the works but ever since it was announced, Disney has been silent regarding its story, characters and release date. Despite this, the cast members such as Idina Menzel have given a few vague updates and a new report indicates the film might be delayed due to the studios prioritizing a holiday special.

According to a report from E! News, Menzel confirmed that the film's script is still in development and that the cast has yet to see what the actual story is going to be.

"We are at story writing and they're working on it and I think I'm in it. That's all I know - unless maybe Elsa falls off an ice cliff and she dies in the first five minutes," Menzel jokingly stated at the time. While the idea of Elsa dying is just a joke, her statement does confirm that no voice recording has yet been done for the movie.

There have been rumors of Anna being adopted and that Elsa and Anna might even get into a romantic relationship but the studios have yet to confirm if any of these are true. There have also been rumors of the main villain being a sorceress capable of manipulating fire, making her the exact opposite of Elsa.

However, one of the most prevalent rumors of late is that the film might not release in 2017 despite earlier indications. Back in February it was revealed by Entertainment Weekly that the studios are working on a holiday special, similar to "Frozen Fever," and that this is going to be the main priority before the studios work entirely on "Frozen 2."

This new special is currently scheduled to air in early 2017 and will be broadcast on ABC. It is likely that the animation department and voice recording will be done for the special before they all shift their attention to "Frozen 2," hinting that the movie won't be coming out until 2018 or even early 2019.
