Low and behold, Floyd Mayweather Jr. holds the title of Forbes Highest Paid Athelete once again. After Tiger Woods, he is also the second athlete to earn $100 million within a year. "Money" is certainly earning big-time money and the earnings are proving it.
Based on Forbes' report, Mayweather was able to rake in $105 million from the 2013 fight against Canelo Alvarez and his fight this year with Marcos Maidana. Forbes also reported that the boxer earned almost $400 million throughout his pro boxing career since 1996. However, the past year has been the goldmine for the "Money."
One proof of how big Mayweather and Canelo's fight is, the pay-per-view grossed $150 million. All-in-all, the match earned $200 million. As with the Mayweather and Maidana fight, Money was guaranteed $32 million and the PPV purchases were around 900,000 to 1 million.
So, what is Mayweather's next money maker? That's still a huge toss-up between a number of boxers. According to Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions president, the fight between Amir Khan and Devon Alexander will determine who will fight Money next. The match will happen on Dec. 13 and whoever the winner is will have the chance to give Mayweather an upset, De La Hoya said.
Khan was supposed to fight Mayweather this year, but he had to say no to the fight due to Ramadan. But now that it's done with, Khan has been itching to fight Mayweather. De La Hoya believes that Khan "deserves it." Of course, Alexander also has a good chance to face Mayweather.
The other familiar name when it comes to Mayweather's next fight is Manny Pacquiao. While the mega bout between the two has been talked about in the past years, nothing is still happening. But since Floyd Mayweather Sr. said that it will eventually happen, maybe it really will.
However, Pacquiao's chance to give Mayweather his first loss will ultimately depend on his match with Chris Algieri. If he wins, then he might face Mayweather in 2015. If he doesn't, well, the super bout may not happen.
Meanwhile, Khan feels very confident in facing Mayweather. He believes he is ready to take on the Money.
He told Fighthype.com, "I really think that he is going downhill and Floyd will be an easier fight... If I was him I would be avoiding me."
