Erica Campbell's president doesn't have to be Christian

If the Grammy winning gospel duo Erica and Tina Campbell of Mary Mary are asked who would get their vote in the upcoming presidential elections, the sisters say that being Christian is not a requirement.

"My president doesn't have to be a Christian. They have to be a good president. Just because you're a Christian doesn't mean that you can run the country. You have to be so well-educated and so well aware of so many issues," Erica said.

She reiterated that people sometimes mix up the credentials between a good faith leader and a good country leader because becoming president entails more than being morally upright. It's also about how the candidate is educated in dealing with the various issues affecting the nation and the world that will come up while in office.

Erica said that its important for the next president to be able to balance and understand the various needs brought about by diversity in the country.

She cited that the new president must be able to cater to the needs of all people – whether they be American, African-American, Spanish, Caucasian or Asian and not someone who will choose the welfare of one over the other.

"I need a capable president who understands social security, who understands our police departments all across the country. The fact that we don't have clean water in Flint, MI, in the United States of America is absurd. I need a president that can handle all of that," she said.

The singer added that she would understand if the next president does not agree with all her religious beliefs as his role is that of the nation's leader, not a pastor or a spiritual leader.

Both sisters, however, said that they were leaning towards a Democratic nominee come election day.
